The Fleur de Lys (flower of the lily) depicts a stylized lily or lotus flower and has many meanings. This symbol has been used to represent French Royalty. In the Roman Catholic Church the lily is the special emblem of the Virgin Mary. The three petals of the fleur de lis have also been used to represent the Holy Trinity. Quebec, Canada and St. Louis, Missouri have the fleur de lys emblem on their flags. The fleur-de-lis is also the symbol of the National Sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma . And while the fleur de lis was always a popular symbol in New Orleans it became a symbol of the city after the devastation of hurricane Katrina.
