I carved the cherry blossom design into the surface of this teapot when the clay was dry enough to not distort but still wet enough to easily and cleanly carve. When applying glaze, I first fill the carved branched with a black wax resist and the carved cherry blossoms and leaves with various glazes. After waxing the carved areas, the inside and outside surfaces are glazed by dipping the piece into the brick red glaze.

This piece was handmade on a potter's wheel out of stoneware and fired to over 2300 degrees F.
