The alpaca fiber is light-weight because it is hollow. These air spaces also give it a remarkable insulating quality. There is no flakiness on the surface of the fibers, making it soft and gentle to the touch. And on top of all this the fleece differs from sheep wool in not containing lanolin. This waxy substance, secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep, has many valuable properties but unfortunately some people are allergic to it. The alpaca fleece does not have this problem, and this hypoallergenic character makes many alpaca products very suitable for babies and small children.
Alpaca yarn is considered to be a luxury material, providing some of the most beautiful pieces of clothing in the world. The softness of the alpaca yarn has frequently been compared to that of cashmere. However, alpaca fiber is often preferred to cashmere because of its higher resistance and more delicate feel. Clothing made out of alpaca fiber is much lighter than items made out of wool. Furthermore, alpaca yarn is by far preferred to wool because of its much warmer feeling. An alpaca sweater will always feel softer and more comfortable than one made of wool or synthetic fabric
Hand wash with mild soap in cold water. lay flat to dry, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.
