This vintage plate depicts a drawing by Frei Cristovao de Lisboa in the 17th century (1625-1631). He made sketches of birds, mammals and plants in Brazil. The original drawings, in pencil and covered in ink, are part of a manuscript "Historia dos animais e árvores de Maranhao" that is kept in an archive in Portugal. In 1967, the archive published a study about the work of Frei Cristovao that included facsimile copies of his drawings. These prints were part of that 1967 facsimile edition.
Size: approx. 9" by 12"
In excellent condition. It is printed on thick paper. The uneven borders and darker areas that you see are in the original drawing that is reproduced in this vintage facsimile.
This is the actual page from a 1967 book, not a reproduction.
