Named for the Roman Emperor at the time of the Mt. Vesuvius eruption, and inspired by the artwork of the Celts, I have decorated this spindle with Grecko-Roman and Celtic key patterns. On the face of the whorl I have burned an adaptation of the key patterned mandalas found in Irish illuminated manuscripts. The whorls edge displays a famous key pattern found in "The Initiation Chamber" of the Villa of Mysteries - a Roman Villa lying some 400 metres northwest of Pompeii, which survived the famous eruption, but was covered in meters of ash and other volcanic material, until its discovery and excavation in the mid 18th century. A traditional Greek key pattern encircles the bottom of the whorl. Another key design, found in the framework of several full page manuscript illuminations, swirls from the hook to the spindle tip. The spindle was given a clear coat finish to protect it from the elements, and the occasional bump.
Welcome this spindle into your home, and add a bring the mysteries of the ancient whorl to your collection.
