We've used a quart-sized and a pint sized mason jar and have drilled small holes in the bottom of the jar for proper drainage. The planters hang from sturdy rope and are extremely easy to hang. We include the hooks and all you have to do is add soil and whatever plants, herbs or flowers you wish.
The planters hang 3 feet from the ceiling to the bottom of the mason jar.

The quart mason jar is 7 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide.
The pint mason jar is 5 inches long and 2 1/2" wide.
