This vest is truly remarkable and very rare. The detail is exhausting and it is all hand work! It is made of leather, I believe goat. The inside is lined with the hair of the goat and the outside is worked with layer upon layer of embroidery, appliques, decorative leather binding and edging, cotton tassels and little circular leather "studs". The arms and neckline are trimmed in black cotton crochet work. The vest is heavy and warm.
It is an amazing piece and could easily be worn over cotton blouses for a chic Bohemian look or in winter with pullovers and jeans.
This piece is museum quality and would also be lovely simply as display or for collectors of Eastern European Folk clothing.
Such vests wear worn and made traditionally by Rumanian peasant women for festivals and special occasions. It was purchased in Hungary and I was told it came from the Transylvanian area of Rumania, which was formally part of Hungary before the wars. It is approximately 100 years old.
For its age, excellent. The leather is robust and not cracking or dry. The embroidery is intact and vibrant. The crochet detail with no pulls. The interior fur is slightly worn along the edge at the bottom in one place, and the interior pocket stitching has come away on one side for about 4 cm - - easily repaired in needed.
Shoulder to shoulder at the back: 39cm
underarm to underarm: 49cm
I am happy to answer any question and provide further photos as requested.
