The pendant on this necklace is a handcrafted, wire wrapped bat. First, the bat shape was formed out of 20g sterling silver wire, and I carefully hammered it to add strength and durability.
Next, I started wrapping the frame with a much thinner sterling wire, a combination of 24-28g. In some areas, not only have I wrapped the frame with the thinner wire, but I've woven the thin wire back and forth between two thicker wires, creating a kind of "spiderweb" effect.
As I'm wrapping the thin wire around the frame, I add gemstone beads to add interest and beauty. In this case, I added mother-of-pearl crescent moons, amethyst, onyx, garnet (the eyes are the only garnet in this piece), quartz crystal, labradorite, and hessonite. After I finished all of the wrapping and weaving, I carefully attached a quartz crystal teardrop shaped dangle to each "spoke" in the bat's wings.
The pendant was then attached to sterling silver chain, which closes with a handcrafted, bat shaped clasp. Every piece of metal in this piece was hand formed by me, with the exception of the chain itself.
After everything was constructed, I used an all natural process to oxidize all of the silver, to give it that "gothic" look. The oxidation process turns all of the silver very dark, and I then go over the entire piece with a polishing cloth and buff it to expose the silver. The oxidizing really highlights all of the different textures created by the wire-wrapping process. This necklace took approximately 8-9 hours of solid working to create, spread out over about 5 days.
The width of the bat pendant is 5". The length of just the pendant is approximately 4". The total circumference of the necklace is approximately 18" (it can be lenghtened, just let me know).
This necklace would be great worn to a prom, a gothic wedding, any type of pirate festival or renn faire, and anywhere you want to flaunt your "dark side".
Please excuse the raindrops in the first few pictures. I live in Oregon, and it's hard to go outside without the rain present sometimes...and I really wanted to get a picture of this necklace in natural light, so that the colors and texture could be seen to their fullest extent.
Please contact me if you have any questions, or if you want a picture taken from a different angle. I'll be more than happy to help in any way I can.
