Blue Horizon measures 3-1/2" diameter ('baseball' size as collectors would say for easy reference) or 10-5/8" in circumference. As mentioned, the gorgeous antique high quality glass is so heavy, you'll love its sturdy, silky feel in the palm of your hand. Hard to imagine something this pretty surviving decade after decade of service and journey at sea.
The float is riddled with massive swirling - some of which you can glimpse in photo #4. The swirls appear 'striated', that is they stand out like the rings of Saturn, due to the glass having been 'frosted' or sand-blasted. The float is over all about 50 to 60% frosted, along with some 'ghost net' pattern markings that can bee seen here and there - appearing like a 'break' in the clouds - as in photos #1 and #5.
The rest of the float is absolutely gorgeous too, yet 'changeable' as mentioned above - and shows about 40% clear glass that is beautifully swirled, and shows more of the inky blue swirls in the glass. These are very difficult to capture in a photo but if you study photos #2, #3 and #4, you'll get an idea of the marvelous inky blue swirling! This is somewhat rare and occurs when a chunk or two of colored glass hasn't completely melted down and mixed in with the batch. Lucky for us! Blue Horizon is also loaded with its own 'galaxy' of bubbling. It shows massive bubbling of all kinds such as 'tear drops, 'comets', comet tails, stretch bubbles, rain drops and tiny champagne type bubbling.
The seal 'button' is gorgeous and appears to have been plucked from a batch of light green glass. The color shines through the 'eye' in center of the seal. Notice how reflective the 'eye' and 'pearl' are (bubble of glass internal and opposite the eye). You can see one or the other or both glowing through in every photo. Even in photo #4 which doesn't show the sealed end at all, you'll notice the 'circle' of light on the left side of the float. This is the eye or pearl reflecting so much light, it actually glows right through the heavy frosted, swirled side of the float. I'd call this a sign of great good fortune! The seal shows inky blue swirls even in the underneath glass. The seal is well placed and its surround edge is smooth with exception of a few minor areas of shallow grazing to the edge. What an amazing personality. Loaded with diversity and surprises no matter which angle you view. I love this old float. Please give it the best home, then pass on to posterity. Thx!
