Vegetable Ivory (VI) buttons became popular, very popular, in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

This matching set of 22 are examples of the early production of commercial tagua nut buttons. Natural tan color, with a flat border and domed center featuring lined texture.

There are 4 larger examples at 7/8"..and 18 smaller at 5/8" across. Each has a self-shank, and a lovely soft polish to the molded, textured surface. The little imperfections in color are the natural imperfections in the tagua nut.

Vegetable Ivory Buttons were also shaped, molded, dyed, stenciled, painted, pierced, just to mention a few of the processes. Many are brown and tan, the natural colors in a tagua nut. They were dyed and embellished with pearl and other materials to compliment them. Some were tiny, while others were big and thick. At first glance VI seems fairly pedestrian in the button arena. But upon closer scrutiny, you will find some very beautiful and interesting antique and vintage buttons out of the simple tagua nut. They are wonderful on garments, and also make up beautiful jewelry and other embellishments.
