WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HANDMADE SOAP AND COMMERCIALLY MADE SOAP?
The next time you're in the store, read the labels. You'll notice the vast majority of the bars on the shelf, don't say 'soap' on their labels. They are often referred to as beauty bars, moisturizing bars, deodorant bars, or body bars - but not soap. This is due to the fact these bars aren't actually soap, and therefore can not legally claim to be; they're detergent bars. The manufacturers make a practice of removing the natural glycerin which is result of the soap making or saponification process, and replace it with synthetic lathering agents and harsh chemicals. Without the humectant glycerin, which attracts moisture to your skin, your skin will feel drier after using commercial 'soap' than if you use natural handmade soap.
Palm oil is becoming a problem, because palm plantations in Indonesia and the mainland of Southeast Asia are rapidly taking over forests. In addition to the basic problem of deforestation, this is a concern because it severely diminishes animal habitat in these regions. In particular, it threatens orangutan viability. We use only certified organic palm oil from South American countries grown and produced using high levels of sustainability, and our suppliers are members of the Palm Sustainability Council. We do not source any palm oil out of Southeast Asia or Indonesia.
✿ REGARDING ORGANIC SOAP: Bar soaps require sodium hydroxide (NaOH, or lye) for their production. Sodium hydroxide is on the allowed list of non-organic ingredients that can be used in making organic products, and it accounts for approximately 10-15% of the ingredients, by weight (not including water or salt and depending on the recipe). Therefore, even if every other ingredient in bar soap were certified organic, the soap would never have an organic content of more than 90%, as this is the maximum level of organic content in a bar soap.
