ADVICE FOR CHOOSING MEDALLIONS:
When selecting a medallion for your light fixture do not be thrown off by the size of the center hole. Your canopy or (the cover that touches the ceiling) sits on top of the medallion and not INSIDE the hole. The hole is for the wires to go through. It would be impossible for the holes to fit all the different size canopies.
Usually, you will want your medallion to be either larger or smaller than the lighting fixture, it should not be the same size as the diameter of your fixture. In most cases, you will want the medallion to be larger.
Since the medallion will be installed on the ceiling it is going to appear smaller, so if you are going to make the medallion a focal point consider having it 3"-6" larger than the diameter of your ceiling fixture. If you want the fixture to be the focal point, and don't want to draw attention away from it, then you will want to select a medallion smaller than the fixture's diameter and have less impact.
Most come in one piece and yes, you need to remove the fixture and run the wires thru the hole and then your canopy sits on top of the medallion.
