We started with a vintage Sears Silvertone AM radio from the 1950's. When we acquired this piece, it was a mess. 60 years of dirt and neglect needed to be scrubbed off before we could do anything. Once it was clean and disassembled, we updated the original color scheme from Beige and Dirt by respraying the cabinet with 6 coats of Pearl White lacquer. The front grid was sprayed Metallic Bronze for contrast. The original grill cloth was shot, so we replaced it with a new Oxblood woven grill used on Fender guitar amplifiers. The original gold plated emblem and bezel were polished by hand. Some minor blemishes exist in the cabinet under the new paint, but nothing major.
Inside, all the original workings are gone. It now sports a sweet 15 watt amp that drives a 5.25" Pyle 3 way speaker. The sound is fantastic (this is our current favorite amp and speaker combination). A new volume control was installed and topped with a vintage gold and bakelite knob. A universal docking tray was added to the top and wired to charge your device whether the speaker is on or off.
For some finishing touches, we added a jeweled orange LED indicator light and strip of Amber LED's behind the grill. When the speaker is turned on (using the new switch on the back), the internal lights offer a subtle glow that lights up the station indicator and speaker.
We are very proud of this piece...elegant and cool. Don't let this one get away.
