This variety is a favorite among collectors and will always be a favorite of mine due to the superior, ingenious construction and the gorgeous dappling on the surface. This is the fortunate result of wooden molds that were hand-whittled or carved out by hand. Then the glass was poured into the molds, bringing these glorious 'works of art' into being. Intended for hard work at sea, these marvelous floats were one of the fisherman's main tools, put to use with the intention of a prolific and prosperous catch.
Inspiration measures 3-3/8" diameter or 10-5/16" in circumference. This size is typically referred by collectors as 'baseball' size, for quick, easy reference. The float shows normal wear from its many decades of service at sea. Each side of the southern hemisphere of Inspiration shows a clear mark in the form of 'I'. These particular marks, often called 'hash' marks, in the form of simple Roman numerals such as I, II, III, IV, were used primarily as a means of matching the lower two halves in the process of production. Other more obscure marks were occasionally used.
Inspiration is a 2nd generation (Post-WW II) Korean or Japanese fishing float. The seal 'button' on this three-piece float shows the typical 'umbilical' type surround indentation near the outermost edge of the seal. The seals are mostly uniform and nicely crafted in the 2nd generation of 3-pc molded floats. This one has survived hard work and decades of service in rough seas in miraculous form. It's in terrific condition - indeed a float of 'good fortune.'
The seal 'button' is nice and thick. The outer surround edge is in MINT condition. No chips, no nicks, no grazing to the edges. This seal is beautiful. An excellent piece of craftsmanship showing a 'textured' pattern within the umbilical surround imprint. It is believed that the better glass makers or master glass blowers used to 'texture' their seals. Amuse yourself with a magnifying glass and study the texture on the seal. You'll be transported back in time, imagining hidden messages encoded in perhaps, ancient cuneiform.
The 3-piece molded floats will always be a collector's favorite due to the amazing craftsmanship and care that went into hand-whittling the wooden molds into which the glass was poured. The design and construction is exquisite when you think they were made for work at sea! Please care for Inspiration well and pass on to posterity or one who will preserve and admire its history and beauty as one of the finest representatives of the old sea arts.
Thank you for helping to care for vintage fishing floats which are rapidly being replaced with plastic or synthetic floats.
