I made this 1.25 ounce drop spindle on our mini-lathe, and features a hand-turned 70 mm Mahogany wood whorl (center and rim-weighted by design), and a hand-turned walnut shaft. Total shaft length is 11 1/8." I've inserted a handmade brass wire hook in the shaft to allow you to hook into your fiber and spin! Mahogany has a lovely, fairly open grain, and has a lovely red-brown color when finished on the lathe with Danish oil, then friction polish! The whorl is attached with a very tight press fit - no glue to deter you, should you ever break the shaft and have to replace it! All of our woodworking products are made and stored in a smoke-free environment, and each is a one-of-a-kind item! The inlay band is acrylic resin, in a light-blue crushed stone pattern, mainly matte surface, but with a few tiny glints of metallic.
I test-spin all of my spindles, and this one worked very well with a Merino and Satin Angora blend, producing a lovely laceweight singles. It's a smooth spinner, and is also relatively long in length, making it ideal for production and plying. This spindle is fairly short, so would be great for travel or classes! Spindles are wonderful for classes, fiber events, and traveling!
