It's high summer, the time of the year when the days just seem to flow into one another with a gentle grace. Here in New Mexico the skies darken with monsoon thunder, bringing the blessing of rain. Thunder was rumbling in a beautiful way over the Sandia Mountains as I photographed this ring in our front courtyard.
This exquisitely-shaped variscite cabochon by lapidarist Gary Wilson seemed the perfect choice for a high desert summer ring. Its creamy aquas interflow with a golden-brown wavelike matrix, while the shape of the cab is a subtle interplay of soft asymmetrical curves. This is Gary's work at its best. The cab was given a high polish that brings out the colors in just the right way.
Variscite might be confused with turquoise, but it has its own soft energy. It is a soothing stone which brings tranquility to the wearer and balance to the energy system, particularly the heart. I think the phrase "gentle, loving earth energy" might be the best way to describe it. We could certainly use plenty of that!
I created a very simple bezel--no need to upstage this gorgeous stone--and left a slender rim of backplate showing around the edge, framing the cab.
The shank was made from my own reticulated silver. I did something a little different with this one: it's U-shaped, with the ends of the shank soldered flush with the edge of the bezel's backplate. So, while it's a small ring, it has a lot of stability and a little extra wiggle room in terms of size, which is around a size 6. It is also tapered so that it is narrower underneath and wider at the sides for extra comfort.
As always, all of my metalwork is done by hand with the simplest possible tools. I gave the silver a warm patina to harmonize with the variscite's matrix, burnished it to a soft polish, and sealed it with Renaissance Wax to help preserve the color.
This one is small enough to be worn as a pinky ring, or makes a lovely adornment for slender fingers.
Size: Approximately ring size 6--it would fit 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. The bezel measures 37mm x 20mm, and the variscite cab is 11mm high.
Care: Rinse in cool water without soap or scrubbing to clean. Dry with a soft cloth. Variscite should not be exposed to any harsh chemicals or cleansers.
Flow of Days will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in a hand-decorated recycled pillow box, along with a handwritten description.
