This is a wonderful genuine Bakelite brooch from the mid to late 1930's at my best estimate. This piece is also shown on page 76 of "Plastic Jewelry of the 20th Century" by Lillian Baker, The back of the brooch is a carved Bakelite piece made to look like a section of a log, with plastic coated stems holding red plastic cherries. The log and the cherries on the earrings and the brooch test positive for Bakelite. This piece is not marked or signed.

The brooch is 2 1/4 inches wide by 3 1/4 inches long from the top of the stems to the bottom of the dangling cherries. The brooch has a dimensional height of 1 3/8 inches. The earrings are 1 inch by 3/4 inches with a dimensional height of 3.8 inches. The cherries on the brooch are 3/4 inches in diameter and perfectly round balls, whereas the cherries on the earrings have a carving mark which adds dimension and texture to the shape of the cherries.

The set is in excellent condition. The screw backs on the earrings function well, and the leaves and stems on the cherries on the earrings are completely in tact. The cherries on the earrings are free of chips, cracks, scratches, or scuffs. The cherries on the brooch and the log section have no chips, cracks, scratches or scuffs, other than normal use or wear marks. The pin on the brooch is bent but the pin and catch function well. The only issue is the stems which have visible breaks on the plastic coating, and areas where the coating is peeling off. I understand that in many of these pieces the original thread has been replaced and that for some collectors the original albeit peeling stems are a desirable trait.

This is a super fun vintage Bakelite set, a highly collectible book piece, and a classic example of the color and whimsy that has made vintage plastic jewelry so desirable.
