Czech glass beads date as far back at the 13th century, at that time the region was called North Bohemia (which is why these beads are occasionally referred to as Bohemian Glass beads). The region was rich in quartz and potash; both of which were needed for glass making. These beads were originally used for making rosary's, until the second half of the 16th century brough forth the interest in "costume" jewelry. This allowed for the increased interest in decorative beads.
Thankfully, the art of czech glass beads has continued and we all can benefit from their beauty.
