Victorian Pre-Raphaelite Art Doll
Christina Rossetti was a talented poet, a tortured soul, and younger sister to Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She never married, and dedicated her life to charitable work and campaigning to get the age of sexual consent raised to the age of 16 to protect against child prostitution, a major issue in Victorian Britain. She may never have been a beautiful woman, but in my opinion had one of the most beautiful minds that ever lived. And she left us with many stunningly haunting verses. I’ve added her poem Remember (1862) below.
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of your future that you plan’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or prey.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by for you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
I found old photographs of Christina on the internet showing her with family in a garden, and decided to dress her in the same style and era of dress as she wore in these, using period costume and fashion books to create a unique design for her dark navy gown. Over her split drawers, shift, corset, and plain white petticoat Christina has a dark red satin cage crinoline, handmade with flat flexible wire and ribbons. Next she has a pale blue cotton petticoat with a deep flounce, and one of patterned blue with navy cotton lawn shaped at the back with extra panels and stitching to ensure a lot of the weight of the dress hangs at the back. Her gown is made from a polished cotton lawn that has a look of silk or satin about it with a gentle sheen. I trimmed the gown with blue lace ruffles and gathered black ribbon, adding a panel of gathered cotton lawn to the hem of her skirts. Her highly lace trimmed sleeves hang over silk cotton baggy under sleeves that match her high round collar.
She and the baby weighs approx. 300g, and she is 36cm tall.
She will be delivered to you securely wrapped and decorated, protected and with contact details; ready to give as a gift, or just because it’s always nice to receive nice parcels.
