It was wheel thrown, stoutly, to withstand the pressure of use and is decorated only by woodfiring at high stoneware temperature. Both the Mortar and the Pestle show interesting markings from the woodfiring process, ranging from the warm toast coloring of the unglazed clay to the natural sheen of melted ash. The pale areas on the bottom of the Mortar and along the side of the Pestle are left by the "wads" or props used to prevent ware from adhering to the shelf in a wood burning kiln and are a valued trait of the woodfiring process.
The shape of the Mortar is the result of its function: the curved sides provide a working surface for the salt, herbs or garlic and conform to the shape of the Pestle. The inward curving rim prevents salt or herbs from spilling over the edge! The pouring lip lets you easily remove the crushed product from the Mortar and provides a parking spot for the Pestle when not in use. And, the outer shape of the Mortar makes it ergonomically comfortable to hold in your hand or to steady it for use on the countertop.
The Pestle measures approximately 3 1/8" length and just under 1" diameter at the wider end. The Mortar measures approximately 1 1/4" height and 3 1/2" diameter.
Each of my Mortar & Pestle sets is "one of a kind" with its own character and would be a beautiful and very useful gift for your kitchen or for a friend's. The set photographed for this listing is the set that would be sent to you.
