Mutant Dino Egg measures 2-3/8" diameter or 8" in circumference. It appears larger, being 2-7/8" tall. Normally we'd not measure the 'height' of a float yet this particular variety tends to be slightly out-of-round, indicating they may have been 'free blown' without the aid of a mold bowl. This float is fairly out-of-round yet many of its brothers and sisters are moreso, some even quite misshapen and lob-sided, lending a hint of comedy.
This unique variety always shows the same characteristics in terms of good weight, usually 'battleship' thick glass, though this particular one is dubbed 'mutant' as it's heavy glass, but not what I'd call 'battleship' which is extreme heavy weight. The variety also generally shows large thick seals, they're generally out-of-round or misshapen, and most have hemp or replacement poly nets from the '60's - and they are usually a unique 'clover' green brilliant color.
Again, this one is dubbed 'mutant' as the color varies a bit, being a lither minty lime green. Yet I'm certain this float is part of the same line or variety, which is described further in the next paragraph. Perhaps the slightly lighter weight glass and lighter color render it an earlier or a later production 'egg'? Perhaps this is 'Early Dino Egg' instead of 'Mutant Dino Egg'? It's all fun so feel free to join in!
Having a limited quantity of these as part of an inherited collection, they are thought to have been made in Korea. However it's been suggested they may have come out of Russia. I tend to think Korean. So with this 'limited edition' I've been unable to locate more of them. I've not come across these anywhere nor through any float collector buddies. I won't be letting many of these go. They've carved their imprint in my heart and each one is precious. There is something slightly comical about seeing a grouping of them, guaranteed to lift the spirits and arouse curiosity. For now, they remain a bit of a mystery and certainly a unique variety with their uniquely identifiable construction.
There's some nice swirling in the southern equatorial area and one 'double' bubble, kind of neat.
This interesting glass float wears a hemp or polyester net showing natural wear from its many decades of service at sea. The net is a twisted twin in cream and tree green, somewhat faded and worn here and there, yet it remains fully intact and in good condition.
Notice the little guy float 'buddy' seen in photo #4. This is 'Lime Drop', a Japanese varietal with light 'River Mouth' markings on the seal. Lime Drop is not part of this sale, but makes a good companion with contrasting size, different netting, and a contrasting 'green' - being quite lime colored. The seal 'button' can be studied in several of the photos. As can be seen, it has endured a number of impact blows, so amazing it has survived intact! This type of net provides no protection to a seal, which is wholly vulnerable to damage by ocean going equipment, fishing gear, rocky beaches, etc. Notice the seal is fully intact and has been well placed, yet the surround edge shows plenty of grazing to the glass edges. Opposite the 'eye' of the seal is a lovely 'pearl' or bubble of minty lime green glass that appears nicely magnified through the swirling glass from most angles. Enjoy this old historical gem in all its 'imperfect perfection'. These artifacts representing the old sea arts will never be made again. Please care for it, and pass it on:)
