This is a beautiful wand made from a large Buddleia shrub in my garden. These shrubs require regular pruning and I often keep some of the wood as it's so hard and fine grained which makes it lovely to work with. This is a relatively straight wand, with a slight kink to form a comfortable handle. There are three pairs of knots, but they're all relatively small and unobtrusive. The wood has seasoned to a gorgeously rich shade of caramel, and the grain is so fine that it's barely visible. In my opinion, the best thing about this wand is the glassy smoothness of the surface of the wood, it just feels wonderful in your hand and every time I pick it up I can't stop stroking it!
As far as I know, there are no recognised magical properties for Buddleia wood, although I've heard from past buyers that it seems to be particularly effective in attracting and encouraging the Fae. I suppose, if it's true, as many believe, that butterflies are faeries "in disguise" then the plant must be remarkably pleasing to them. The long panicles of white to purple blossom get literally covered in butterflies during the summer, giving the shrub one of its common names of Butterfly Bush. However, there is a slightly more... forceful?... sinister?... at least, a definitely less cosy side to this wood. It grows in its native China in large groves on riverbanks, and despite their undeniable beauty these are avoided by the local people as they almost invariably harbour tigers. I often feel the wood has imbued a little of that tiger spirit, the wild and untamed aspect of potentially dangerous nature. I think that's why it seems to me to work so well with what I think of as Faeries... not the cutesy, insect-winged picture book variety, but the nature spirits that inhabit and look after all the plants and wild places. Perfect for any practitioner of Faery Wicca, anyone with an interest in the Fae generally, or anyone who simply wants to experience an uncommon wand wood.
Size: Almost fourteen inches long and about five eighths of an inch thick.
355mm x 16mm.

All my wands are, by their very nature, unique. They are grown, not made. They are all formed from twigs and branches lost naturally by the native trees in and around the perimeter of my totally organic garden. The wood is collected, identified, and sorted, then stored for several months to ensure it is properly seasoned. Then it is smoothed into the right size and shape for that particular twig. Finally, each wand is given at least two coats of organic vegetable-derived oil to protect and nourish the wood. This oil contains no chemicals or preservatives and is exactly as it comes from the press. I will not cut trees to get the wood, and if I’ve used prunings I’ll say so. I will not use power tools of any kind, and I certainly won’t use any artificial chemical substances such as stain, dye, paint, or glue. If you like, you can embellish your wand in whatever way you choose, with paint, carving, cords, ribbons and crystals, but I leave them as pure and natural as possible while still being beautiful, practical and non-splintery. All wands will be given another coat of oil before dispatch, wrapped in paper, padded with shredded paper and posted with their relevant literature in a stout tube or custom made box to ensure safe arrival. All the packaging material is reused, recycled and/or recyclable, so please dispose of it thoughtfully.
