Clivia miniata (Kafir Lily)- This member of the Amaryllis family has thick strap-like leaves and umbels of bright orange flowers with yellow centers. It is an understory plant that prefers mixed bright light and humusy soil. It prefers a rest in the fall with decreased feeding and water to stimulate it to bloom. If it is reluctant to bloom try cooling it into the low 50’s during the rest period and then feed it with a “bloom boosting” plant food that is high in Potassium. The plant needs to have 12-14 leaves before it is mature enough to bloom-usually about 2 years old.
