On the inside of the bowl and on the bottom, wooden butterflies were put in. Small pieces of cherry wood, cut in a way that helps hold the bowl together. There was a small hairline crack in the wood before it was carved, and to save the wood and keep it together, two butterflies were put in the bottom and one on top. It adds a little character to the piece along with strength for over the years.
In the price of this piece is indicative to past sales and the time and effort required to create this bowl. Unlike hand spun and hand turned bowls on a wood lathe, hand carved bowls using wood carving tools, mostly a wood gouge and a mallet, requires a lot more time and a lot more physical effort. It is a slow process but allows one to get looks no hand spun bowl can achieve.
This bowl is very large, it is 20 1/2" in largest diameter and has a shallow height of 3 1/2". It was sealed with walnut oil and makes it food safe and able to be used to serve or hold food.
This bowl was made by myself, Jeremy Osborne.
Thank you for your time.
