The ones gracing the top of your letterhead stationery were drawn from shells found in Newark Bay and the Kill van Kull, waters of NYHarbor. There is no telling how old these shells are, but once upon a time, oysters were extremely plentiful and sold on street corners, a dime a dozen.
NYC has oyster raising programs, as the shellfish are prodigious in filtering pollutants out of the water. NJ, our neighbor, bans it, for fear of poachers selling them for food. Same waters, different laws.
