French born, London based designer Catherine Walker was renowned for two things: her disdain for the spotlight and her close, personal relationship with Diana Spencer, otherwise known as Princess Di. Due to her reticence with the media, Catherine Walker pieces are notoriously hard to come by and even harder to date. However, this dress is exceptional in many ways, but mainly because it has a very famous sister worn by Princess Di at the 1987 Cannes film festival and sold at auction at Christies in 1997 for US$70,700. The dress worn by Princess Di was ice blue, but this iteration is fire engine red with tiny black polka dots. This is a once in a lifetime piece that CMV could never hope to stumble upon again but we take comfort in the fact that it will soon be back in its natural habitat attending state dinners and rubbing shoulders with senators – this is a dress with true gravitas.
