This is a colorful and interesting character bowl. I turned the bowl from a piece of Spalted Maple that had been cut down due to a storm. It is quite interesting with knots, natural cracks and beautiful coloring. Spalting is any form of wood coloration. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can occur under stressed tree conditions or even living trees. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss which keeps it from being used for some construction, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought after by woodworkers and woodturners.
With all that said when you turn a wet piece of wood on the lathe, in this case Maple, the drying process creates a piece with its own character. Not only does the bowl change shape to more of an oval but it also sometimes produces checks or cracks especially around knots. I have sealed the cracks and am pleased with the look of the bowl that you can only obtain in a hand turned one-of- a- kind piece. I reshaped the bowl to round after drying and used a beautiful mauve resin to fill the main knot hole which went all the way through the piece.
The bowl measures approximately 3 inches tall and approximately 8 inches in diameter at the broadest point . It has been turned to approximately ¼ inch in thickness. I finished the bowl with a cellulose sealer and several coats of lacquer that not only add to its durability but also brings out the beautiful texture of the wood. While not to be used with raw foods it can be used as a fruit or vegetable bowl or simply added to an interesting piece of home décor on its own.
