Length: 20 inches
Tapers: Sharp, 3 inches from both ends
Finish: Vegetable oil. Cheap, food safe, and found in almost every kitchen. The oil brings out the color of the wood and seals the surface protecting it from cracking and splitting.
This rolling pin is made from red bud wood - a tree named for the beautiful blossoms it has during the spring. These trees rarely get very large and when they do the only time you'd get a log from one is if the owner wished to have it removed or if it was taken down from a storm. Because of this (and the beautiful color) I consider Red Bud to be extremely rare wood and price is very highly. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on large board of it but I may not see any more, especially of this size, for an extremely long time.
The board I got was from a fallen Red Bud, reclaimed in New York state.
Red Bud is a very hard, tight grained wood. The yellow color is natural (no dies or stains were used, only transparent oil). There is some spalting in the wood which caused some dark stripes adding further to the uniqueness of this piece.
