This globe is a glass orb covered in 12 laquered paper gores with a cast brass plated half meridian on stepped wood grained pressed metal base. The oceans are finished in olive and this globe carries a slightly simplified surface map with overprinting in red.
This is a beautuful and petite size which is perfectly suited for shelf display and illuminated radiating a soft warm glow that can only be acheived with a glass globe. This globe is a good example of an illuminated globe at a period when globemakers produced some of the most creative and innovative designs due to the advancement of new technologies and materials.
Political borders displayed include; Isreal (changed in 1948) and Siam (will change in 1949) these two together rather simplifed the task of dating this globe accurately.
The globe has been very nicely maintained and only exhibits only 1 pinpoint (located in the North Atlantic) and no areas of missing map. This can be seen more clearly when lit. Also the globe when illuminated does have some darkening of gores and darkened areas, these also can only be veiwed when lit. The globe maintains it's gloss and the base it in excellent condition.
This little gem would be the perfect addition to or a great way to begin a collection!
As always, ENJOY!!!
