From Gense of Sweden -- a fabulous, large and never-used 1950s stainless steel salad bowl and matching two-piece salad utensil set.
When I saw this for the first time, I had to know its story. How did this amazing salad set go unused for more than 50 years?
Its owner explained that the set had been a wedding present to her parents, who married in 1954. Her mother did not care for modern design, and so the stainless salad set found a home in a closet, where it sat -- in its gift box -- for more than half a century.
O. M. G. !!!
After that jaw-dropping story, the owner apologized to me for no longer having the original 1950s gift box with the set -- it had fallen to pieces when she'd lifted the set down from the closet shelf.
I had to have it. You might feel that way too.
This stainless steel salad set was made in Sweden in the early 1950s, before the 1954 wedding for which it was originally a gift. It's made of high-quality, 18-8 stainless steel .
The salad bowl is wonderfully sized and beautifully proportioned. The Gense 18-8 stainless steel bowl has that characteristic mid-century conical form; the diameter at the base is just under 4 inches, compared to 14 inches across the bowl's rim. The slanted sides raise the rim 6 inches from the table surface.
The matching Gense 18-8 stainless steel salad utensils are each 14 inches long with gracefully tapering handles.
The owl and utensils are in lovely, never-used vintage condition -- not mint, but very close. There are a few lines inside the bowl that I think came from the utensils moving against the inner surface at one time or another, and a straight line on the underside of the bowl. The utensils have a small stray scuff or two that seem consistent with resting against one another. Please look at the photos -- double click them to enlarge to the full size (2000 pixels across) to examine them for yourself.
These are in wedding-gift condition, perfect for the couple that lfavors mid-century modern design.
Can you tell I'm excited to have found these?
You will be too!
