This vintage plate depicts a drawing by Frei Cristovao de Lisboa in the 17th century (1625-1631). While he was in Brazil he made sketches of the flora and fauna of the region. The original drawings, in pencil and covered in ink, are part of a manuscript "Historia dos animais e árvores de Maranhao" that is kept in an archive in Portugal. In 1967, a study about the work of Frei Cristovao that included facsimile copies of his drawings was published. These prints were part of that 1967 facsimile edition.
A facsimile is a copy or reproduction of a manuscript or other item of historical value that is as true to the original source as possible. It differs from other forms of reproduction by attempting to replicate the source as accurately as possible in terms of scale, color, condition, and other material qualities.
Size: approx. 9" by 12"
