These dolls were popular in the early 1900's and were printed by several companies directly onto bolts of fabric. The very faint traces of lace-trimmed undergarments and high red stockings indicate that this was produced by Art Fabric Mills.
Made of sturdy cotton, stuffed with firm cotton or wool batting and hand-sewn together. Repairs have been made by several different hands and in different colored thread. The material is sound with no holes or damage but it has tanned over the years and suffered some staining. There is an odd bit of stitching on the front torso which is not a repair and doesn't seem to represent anything in particular...just another thing to wonder about this lovely old doll.
No mustiness or mildew, just a slight hint of that 'vintage' aroma that we happen to like but others may not. Please consider this if you are sensitive or have allergies. We really don't think a wash would harm this doll but will leave this decision to the buyer.
She was found with 6 garments; 3 short printed cotton frocks and three long nighties. These were machine stitched with cute details and added lace trim on some. The sewing on the white flannel gown is more sophisticated than the rest with embroidered detail on the yoke and sleeves. It and the red and black print dress have finished edges, the rest are raw and we like to imagine that they were sewing projects for small hands. All are simply adorable.
