a one-of-a-kind ethnic / tribal vintage assemblage necklace on brown leather cord with African trade beads, Kauri shells, amber nugget and Zinder cross used as traditional money in Africa.

I had much fun to make this African trade beads assemblage necklace, being a modern piece of jewelry and having a lot of traditional meaning, because I used vintage beads, shells, a yellow honey amber nugget and a Zinder cross which all were traditional money in Africa. They also were sign of wealth for the owner and some types were, and still are worn as protective amulets. Please see the material description below for more information. The assemblage is strung on a vintage hammered silver ring, attached to two strands of 3mm brown leather cord with a beautiful antique finish. This leather cord is kept together with a vintage yellow Dogon glass ring, sandwiched between two Karen hilltribe fine silver rings. The necklace closes with handmade (by me) slightly patinated bronze hook and eye clasp.

length of the assemblage is 13 cm / 5 1/8”
length of the necklace from the back of the neck to the base of the assemblage is 45 cm / 18”
length of the leather cord (clasp included) is approx. 33 cm / 13,2”

Material:
- a vintage angular agate bead with beautiful mottled pattern from Cambay / India, where agate has been mined and processed to beads for over 2500 years. These agate beads were exported (not only) to West Africa to be used as currency. Single beads with beautiful pattern were / are worn as talismans and protective amulets
- vintage kauri shells: these are the most widespread traditional money, used in Africa, South and East Asia and the South Seas
- vintage king bead, Venice / Italy: this honey yellow bead has a beautiful pattern with stripes and eyes in a rather rare color combination (green, white, red). King beads were exchanged for African gold
- a small vintage green and a small yellow round bead with worn polychrome pattern, Venice /Italy, also exchanged for African gold
- two vintage ovate rust colored beads with black and white stripes, Venice, Italy. These were exchanged for African palm oil
- two vintage rondelle beads with clear core and striped rust-black-white outer layer, Venice, Italy, which also were exchanged for African palm oil
- a translucent honey yellow „Maasai“ pony bead from Venice / Italy, this type of glass bead was exchanged for African ivory
- a vintage long zylinder shaped millefiori bead from Venice, Italy with peacock pattern in yellow, green, white, blue and black
- a yellow honey amber nugget. Amber was and is highly valued especially in northern Africa. Beads are worn and kept for their value, are worn as amulet angainst various diseases, amber jewelry is given as bridewealth
- a vintage Zinder cross (actually a ring): this central piece of this assemblage is „small money“, exchanged for items of daily need. Zinder crosses are worn as big strands around the neck by Tuareg men. They are made of a coin silver alloy.
- an antique stone disc, also used as traditional money
- a vintage faceted silver bead with black inlay, handmade by the Tuareg. The silver is an alloy, not sterling
- a vintage yellow Dogon glass ring
- antique Venetian, vintage Czech and modern Japanese seed beads, modern tiny Karen hill tribe (Thailand) fine silver beads, two hammered fine silver rings, also Karen hilltribe, a vintage hammered silver ring (stamped 800) used as bail, several modern sterling silver rondelles, rosy, slightly patinated bronze wire, and brown leather cord with antique finish.
