for Christa Mark and Asher
I have loved making these necklaces.
wish they accompany you all through your new lives together..
lots of happiness.
I started with a pile of fibres and some raw clay,
a beautful place
and this is what came out.
Sitting by the log fire
I shaped carved painted and sealed the clay into 10 off~centre holed beads,
the blue one has the imprint of an ammonite fossil from the hearth .
I hand spun fine cotton hemp and linen twines
They hold the memory of many peaceful hours cross legged looking over the sea
weaving the strands into tight intricate braids
hooked over my big toe,
and the moment I came across the beautiful fine drift piece of hardwood and shell.
To build the finished piece I worked on my mannequin
as I would when designing a garment,
hand sewing the braids and beading together so that it lies snuggly on the curve of the neck.
The piece is subtle yet rich in texture, detail ,
sobre nuances of muted tones
a feeling of "always been there"
and is comfortable and soft to wear.
