This plate is about 8.25 inches in diameter. It is white with a gold edge. The rim of the plate is decorated with green and pink thistles. It was made in England, of fine bone china, and bears the mark Queen Anne on the back.
The coat of arms is depicted in the middle of the plate and is heavily symbolic. According to Wikipedia, the crest shows two hands, "one naked and the other clad in armour, holding a thistle, representing Scotland, and laurel, representing peace." The shield, "a blue saltire on a white field, is a simple reversal of the Scottish flag. It is also charged with an escutcheon bearing the Royal arms of Scotland; a gold shield with a red rampant lion in a double border decorated with fleurs de lis." The compartment of the coat of arms "includes thistles as well as the trailing arbutus or mayflower, the floral emblem of Nova Scotia." The supporters "are the unicorn from the royal arms of Scotland" and "a member of the Mi'kmaq First Nation indigenous to Nova Scotia." The Latin motto "Munit haec et altera vincit" translates as, "One [hand] defends and the other conquers."
This item is in very good condition.
Please keep in mind that this item is vintage and we love it, in part, because of its age, history and patina. I feel that beauty is enhanced by the fact that they have been used and loved and they don't look brand new.
