The name of Frozen Charlotte became attached to them because of their appearance. The dolls are unglazed which makes them very pale white, giving them a frozen look which is further emphasised by their lack of moving limbs.
The name "frozen Charlotte" originates from a poem written in 1843 by Seba Smith and based on the true life story of a young woman who refused to bundle up warmly to go on a sleigh ride with her beau in which she froze to death during the journey.
“He took her hand in his — O, God!
’Twas cold and hard as stone;
He tore the mantle from her face,
Cold stars upon it shone.
Then quickly to the glowing hall,
Her lifeless form he bore;
Fair Charlotte’s eyes were closed in death,
Her voice was heard no more.”
A tragic end for poor Charlotte but her name lives on with these tiny antique dolls with their frozen look.
