Gerardo López was an accomplished silversmith who was recognized as having one of the best tallers (artist studios) in Taxco, Mexico in the 1950’s and 60’s. His work is sculptural and highly skilled, and this set is a wonderful example. It is 980 sterling silver (more parts of actual silver than regular sterling, 980/1000, as compared with 925/1000). In this sense, the silver is brighter in color because there is more of it. The necklace and bracelet can be worn separately, or they can be joined together as one, forming a longer necklace. This makes the set more versatile, depending on what you are wearing and your own personal style. Both pieces are joined by a simple flattened hook and concealed eye on the underside.
The design is comprised of two matched opposing links that meet at the centers with scrolls and abbreviated curls. Your eye can perceive the alternating sets as wings and scrolls, or scrolls and flourishes, depending on where you start and stop. When the bracelet is attached as an extender, it has an opposite arrangement which I feel is intentional (perhaps to make it lay properly), and mentioned for clarity. If you are wearing the bottom part of the necklace with points in, the bracelet extender has points out, adding a little more interest overall.
The set is in fine vintage condition, and each piece is marked with “LOPEZ TAXCO” in a circle around “980” with two stars, and Eagle 25. It has age appropriate wear and a light patina. One hook is slightly bent. It is a highly collectible and very attractive vintage Taxco, Mexiico 980 silver set.
This set will be presented with each piece in a tarnish resistant pouch and gift box.
