As the story goes, the God Poseidon and Medusa had a bit of a fling, back when she was good looking. Athena didn't much like this union between Poseidon and Medusa so she cursed Medusa to her often remembered snake-haired form. At the time of her death it is said that Pegasus emerged from her neck.
