The Mount Washington Company was one of the most successful producers of mid-to-late 19th century art glass. From exquisite shapes and textures to remarkable hand painted accents, the company created true works of art. After hand-blowing the glass, the bowl was treated in an acid bath to create the velvet-like satin finish. After this step, the 3 ¼” high by 4” diameter bowl was decorated by hand with a floral, vine-like, enamel. The paint has mellowed to a gray-green patina. A pontil mark is visible on the bottom. The wood stand is not included in the sale.
Provenance: purchased in 1985 at Ellie Carver Antiques, Topsham ME
There are numerous Mount Washington rose bowls in a variety of colors. The blue satin finish highlighted by the diamond quilt pattern is a beautiful example of the company’s work. What makes this piece unique is the meticulous hand-painted floral design.
