Cowrie shells are natural shells from the ocean that have been used in art, jewelry, religion and society in many cultures throughout the ages. West African cultures used cowrie shells as currency before coins and bills, as well as cultures in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Even today the name of the currency in Ghana, West Africa is "Cedi", the same word for cowrie shell. Cowrie shells are still used as a form of divination in West Africa and the African Diaspora; they symbolize the creative force, life, money, and spirit.
