One of my "Secret Sigil" range of unique unisex pendants, with the symbol marked onto the back of the piece to be hidden from view. The symbol corresponding to the tree which furnished the wood for each pendant is burned into the wood at the back, in this case in the the same way that Ogham was marked along the edge of stones using the square edge as the centre line, which makes it less obvious than when the symbols are marked in the usual way... hence the name "Secret Sigil". I also like the idea of keeping the magical purpose hidden, and thereby increasing the "occult" feel of the piece.
This particular pendant is made from a tiny plank cut from the branch of a Rowan tree, you may recognise the glorious colouring from the Rowan bullroarers. It really is quite breathtakingly beautiful, with a rich range of warm colours and an iridescence that reminds me of pearlescent paint in places. The silky smoothness of the surface just begs to be touched and I defy anyone to be able to wear one of these pendants without constantly stroking it. Rowan is very protective and can help to increase psychic powers, so this is an ideal piece of ritual jewelry to wear whenever you're performing magic.
These "Secret Sigil" pendants are popular with anyone who prefers to be a little more discreet about their beliefs and doesn’t always want to wear anything too overtly pagan. On the most simple level they're a lovely way to carry a piece of nature with you throughout your day, and if you choose the wood type for the magical qualities you require and wear it with intent, then a pendant like this one will surround you in a bubble of sacred space and envelop you in its subtle influence. The Celtic Ogham symbols marked on the back can be a constant reminder of your Celtic heritage and help you to invoke the powers of the tree spirit. If you don’t want to wear it then you can carry it in your pocket or just hang it somewhere in your home or car. It would make a perfect gift for anyone born in the right month according to the Celtic tree calendar, but as the Celts used a lunar calendar I’ll leave you to work out when that would be as it varies slightly from year to year.
It has been finished with a light coat of oil and will come strung on a waxed cotton cord, so it contains no animal products or metal parts.
Sometimes called Mountain Ash or the Witchen Tree. Rowan is very protective, especially against lightning and evil witchery, and can be useful in healing. It is said to increase psychic powers and bring power and success. It is allegedly the best wood to use if dowsing for metal. It is also the traditional choice for Druid's staffs.
Size: About an inch and three quarters long, just over three quarters of an inch across and about a quarter of an inch thick.
44mm x 21mm x 6mm.
This item will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.
For a full list of the woods I might have available as well as their magical properties, associated folklore and a bunch of other stuff, check out my blog at: http://www.mazedasastoat.blogspot.com/
