This was a long term project and if you have ever ventured into woodworking, you know what I am talking about. There is a significant amount of knowledge needed to fully appreciate wood. Each species has its own qualities. Time needed to cure the wood in order to produce the sculpture of particular features, once it ends up its cycle, or if it was pruning involved. Density and the direction of grain. All of it matters.
This sculpture was made from 3 types of wood: Holly (Ilex sp), American Walnut (Juglans sp) and Tupelo (Nyssa sp). Each part is carefully carved, sanded, woodburned, stained (ink), and varnished with protective conditioner. Each piece of wood came from US, in particular from North Carolina. There are 3 spots of natural lichen on it as well, displaced from fallen branch.
Design was carefully done until I was happy with the results. For me, personally, the shape of the leaves (yes, they were carve in that shape, not bent), as well the unique coloration of each of them, was the final touch needed for the mini oak to become "alive"
Statement art piece is 8" high, and the canopy is 9" wide. There are 3 earth magnets holding the top of the box in the place. Perfect to hide your treasuries where no one would look for them!
The box is designed and made by me, signed at the bottom.
