This is a fine art giclee, IT IS NOT calendar or poster quality, nor something I run off on a home printer or at Kinko's using packaged paper from the art and office supply store.
This image can be interpreted in 2 ways, the old time traditional Lakota wisdom teaching, or the more recent Christian wisdom teaching.
1. First, the older tradtion:
Blue Woman is a spirit being ( not a goddess)dwelling at the center of the big dipper, She aids midwives and assists women in labor. All the visual elements are all related to traditional Lakota midwifery, pregnancy, birth and lactation teachings. Rattlesnake buttons, ground to powder and consumed in hot liquid were believed to hasten slow deliveries. Milkweed for healthy, abundant lactation and red raspberry leaves for to reduce cramping, provide vitamins and balance hormones. Sage tea was used for many reasons, including disinfection. In the background grazing bison symbolize Pte, the word used when discussing the female bison in its spiritual aspect and importance. Red, a Lakota symbol for good health, fertility, the northern direction, bison, and Ina Maka (mother earth), flows like healthy blood, and serves as a blessing encircling the image.
The spirit wears a trade blanket of deep blue surge upon which the heavens and big dipper is displayed, using the traditional hourglass symbol for stars used on the old winter count hides. Her dress is ornamented with wapiti teeth. She hovers protectively above the expectant woman, smudging her with a smoldering braid of fragrant sweet grass, to attract good energy. The pregnant woman clutches white sage, to repel negative energies, purify, disinfect and drive away evil spirits. Its summertime, a season of abundance, and the woman wears a trade – cloth dress of gay calico. The woman looks surprised as her birth pangs have just begun, and she’ll son be in labor. The healthy baby floats in her womb, ready to enter our world of light and sound. The womb is divided into sky and earth. This color combination, used in this way, symbolizes universal balance.
2. The Christian wisdom teaching: The Annunciation, in which the angel comes to the young Virgin Mary with the knowledge she is carrying the future Christos, the little god of Love. Mary reacts with surprise and alarm - wouldn't you be if you were 14 or 15 years old and a spirit being appeared from nowhere announcing that even though a virgin, you were now pregnant with a god? The baby suspended in the womb symbolizes wholeness and unification. The flora and fauna are native to the North American plains, each symbolizing something associated with fertility, abundance, pregnancy, health, woman as sacred being and portal to the Divine, healing and balance.
