This variety is a favorite among collectors and always a favorite of mine with the superior, ingenious construction and gorgeous dappling on the surface. This is the fortunate result of wooden molds that were hand-whittled or carved out by hand. The glass was poured into the molds, bringing these glorious 'works of art' into being. Intended for hard work at sea, these marvelous old glass fishing floats were one of the fisherman's main tools, put to use with the intention of a prolific and prosperous catch. Illuminate is in especially excellent condition.
Illuminate is a 2nd generation (Post-WW II) Korean or Japanese glass fishing float. It measures 3-1/2" diameter or 10-1/2" circumference, about the size of a nice orange. The seal 'button' on this three-piece float shows the typical 'umbilical' type surround indentation near the outermost edge of the seal. The seals are mostly uniform and nicely crafted in the 2nd generation of 3-pc molded floats. View the seal in photos #1 and #5. Notice how it's an artifact worthy of museum quality display. The seal is in MINT condition, showing no chips, no nicks and no grazing to the surround edge. The center of the seal is wonderfully 'textured'. It has been said the better or master glass makers used to 'texture' their seals. This one has survived decades of service at sea in terrific condition!
Generally each side of the southern (as the float normally sits) hemisphere on a 3 piece molded glass fishing float shows a clear mark, often called a 'hash' mark, in the form of simple Roman numeral such as I, II, III, or IV. These were used primarily as a means of matching the lower two halves in the process of production. Other more obscure marks were occasionally used and Illuminate is one of those lucky exceptions. It shows a clear strike, perfect '+'. Notice is clearly in on the side of the float in the last photo. The '+' on each side (east and west) is a perfect, clear strike! A beautiful thing. While the '+' mark is not considered rare, in my experience it's far less common to find a '+' than those with Roman numerals. And only 20% of floats bear marks.
Everything about Illuminate is excellent. I hope this unforgettable piece goes to the best home and be sure to pass it on to posterity. This stunning bit of glass history, a truly wonderful representative of the old sea arts, will never be made again. We are the keepers of such treasures:)
