Dating from the late Victorian / Edwardian period late 1800s circa 1880s to 1910; this is a very unusual antique glass button, in a pale tourquoise/acqua shade. The oval shape is made from pressed moulded glass, with painted decoration imitating millefiori Italian Micro mosaic so popular in the Victoiran and Edwardian era.
When new, this button had brightly painted decoration but now the paint generally has almost worn away so now there are just faint traces of bright colors.I think it actually might have been quite garish and I personally prefer now this lovely softly aged patination. Around the beaded edge there are traces of gilt paint.
The pictures are considerably enlarged to show the remains of the painted details.

It measures 3cm wide and is 2.2cm deep (1-3/16ins wide x7/8ths ins deep) It is approximately 6mm thick allowing for the domed shape. At the rear it has a recessed four way, birdcage brass shank; which has been fused into the glass.

This item is in very antique good condition with no major damage or chips. It has not been washed for fear of damaging the painted decorations. The rear shows slight stress cracks commensurate with age ,but nothing to mar a very fine button that would make an unusual addition to any collection; or special vintage project.

I have some other more modern painted micro mosiac buttons here that are very unusual. http://www.etsy.com/shop/Butterflysue?section_id=5421383
