The fibers come from renewable resources …. from bamboo and from soy. The lengthwise yarn is bamboo, a soft yet strong fiber. The bamboo gives a lovely sheen to the shawl. The interwoven thread is soysilk, an environmentally friendly fiber made of byproducts from the tofu manufacturing process. I find both fibers a pleasure to weave with. Silky and lustrous, the handwoven shawl drapes beautifully.
The shawl contains over 1300 fine lengthwise threads. I carefully selected the palette of colors, measured the yarn, and painstakingly threaded it onto my loom. I touch every inch of the fiber I use. My complex design used all twelve shafts of my floor loom and required intense concentration as I stepped on treadles and threw the shuttle to interweave the fiber. I weave entirely by hand (and foot), without the aid of a computer. Creating this shawl was pure pleasure. The colors and the pattern are so vibrant!
I finished the ends with hand hemstitching and with an additional 5” of hand-twisted fringe.
