Collected in West Africa in the 1970’s, this amazing elephant ivory bracelet has a graceful form with both ends having applied gold tips. Its shape could be described as a coiled snake, though with a stylized abstract head. It is genuine, and original, but without marks as to gold content, however, it tested at 14K gold using the acid test. It is in fine vintage condition with a small amount of soiling from general wear. There is one carved mark next to the gold head on the inside spiral, probably made during its creation. I have only lightly cleaned it with a soft dry cloth (see remarks below). This special vintage bangle has a beautiful presence, as well as a tribal feel.
CARE OF IVORY: Special care should be taken when storing or cleaning ivory. Always store ivory in conditions that you, yourself would like, and never in any extremes of hot or cold, and in low relative humidity. Also, water and cleaning agents are to be completely avoided, as they can be destructive to ivory. For more information, be sure to visit the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute website which outlines the care and handling of ivory.
