Sebnitz ornaments are so-named because they were made in the German village of Sebnitz, located in the Erzgebirge Mountains near the Austrian border. They were produced from approx.1870 to 1914.
I made this ornament with the same materials and in the same style as the antique originals.I used cotton, cardboard,German Dresden trim,German crinkle wire, glass beads, and etc.
The cottage industry specialized in wrapping cardboard forms and shapes in cotton, metallic foil and plastic perforated with holes.Early century advertising called them Glitter Christmas Tree Ornaments. They were marketed as having a -- strong glitter film with a pierced through appearance.
The ornaments combined the widest variety of matrials used in making ornaments.Sebnitz ornaments used upwards of seven or eight different materials.Various materials used were cardboard, paper scrap, cotton, perforated metallic plastic,
foil, heavy wire, glass beads and tubes, crinkle wire, wax figures, chalkware figures, crepe paper, fabric flowers, chenille and tinsel roping, natural foliage and Dresden trims. The charm of Sebnitz Christmas Ornaments is the unique and creative way these materials were assembled.
