The tuning (at 444 Hz) is: E, A, B, C#(+20), D(+20), E(+20), F#(+20), G#(+20), A(+20), B. We encourage you to listen to a sound file. Email us at kalimbakiva [!at] yahoo.com and we will send it to you.
A kalimba is classified as a plucked idiophone (a percussion instrument), which means it’s less like a piano and more like a drum, despite its popular western nickname of thumb piano, and we believe that when you approach the kalimba from this perspective (that it’s a percussion instrument and not a piano) you’ll naturally get a lot more out it. This is why we tune our kalimbas to sound best when played rhythmically and/or with interlocking, left-right patterns, rather than when played melodically. In other words, we don’t just go straight up the scale (C, D, E, F, G…) and you’re not going to be able to play Mary Had a Little Lamb on one of these guys, but what you will be able to do is so much more. Don’t worry, we’re not talking about exotic, discordant tunings here…these kalimbas sound great and they’re easy to play and play well, with no musical training whatsoever.
