About my ivory:
Scrimshaw, the art of incising into ivory and other organics, is an ancient technique used by just about every culture who had bones lying around. I've used the technique to develop my own simple line drawings. I use inks and waxy pencils for color, so the designs are quite durable.
My ivory is all ancient or "fossil ivory" so no animals were harmed in the making, and it is entirely legal. I mainly use North American mammoth ivory. Mammoth ivory has a distinctive cross-hatching pattern, which I try to capture in the photos. These pieces are actually chips cast aside by other makers since they are too small for other purposes. The various colors are a result of minerals leeching into the ivory while it sat deep in the earth for centuries. Depending on soil types, you get different colors.
Enjoy history, beautiful rare goods, and a free conscience all in one!
